Christ alive, am I the only one who HATES beyond hate the government endorsed filth peddling that goes on every time I switch the stinkin’ telebox on?? What am I on about? Fucking nicotine replacement treatments, that’s what.
I cannot believe that they are allowed to actively promote ‘using’ one of the most addictive drugs we know of to help people stop being hooked to exactly the same fookin drug. It’s ludicrous. Anyone who has stopped smoking using such treatments has quit in spite of them, not because of them.
The very way the advertisements are presented is an insult to our collective intelligence. All that “This will help you to break the habit” – what a load of SHITE. I am in the habit of driving on the left but when I go abroad I find that habit very easy to break. It’s the fuckin nicotine I’m addicted to you bastards, not the habit of smoking a cigarette. If it were then I’d smoke herbal fags all day long and leave the lung cancer ta very much. They know full well that most smokers using their therapies end up addicted to the bloody things and still smoke fags as well. They just don’t give a shit as long as they get paid.
Don’t get me wrong, I realise that all marketing is to some degree the spawn of satan (tongue firmly planted in cheek) but these nicotine patches etc really take the piss. If these treatments work, why the fuck aren’t they prescribing alcohol laced food products for alcoholics?
Apologies for the rant, I feel slightly better even though I’m down to my last pack of nicorette so I’d best get some more in quick…

You are trying to defend idiots against peddlers of idiocy. It's hardly any different from the tabacco companies themselves, except from a government perspective at least you don't create a burden on the NHS by using patches.
The government doesn't really give a shit if you die or live, but it does want to make sure you give them as much money as possible and don't cost too much when you die.
Notice the countries that put the heaviest sin taxes on cigarettes, and which spend the most time trying to cut the habit have national health services.
If you can't give up a simple thing like nicotine (which causes about as much pain as a common cold), then you deserve to be taken advantage of... and should probably just be cut off from the NHS as an excessive burden on society, and told to pay even more taxes for being dumb... that way we can ecourage the erradication of your genes from the pool and get rid of one more self destructive human habit.
"...and should probably just be cut off from the NHS as an excessive burden on society."
Mmmm... sounds familiar, maybe you'd like all smokers to wear a distintive badge to mark them apart from decent people? I suppose you think fat people and boozers are a burden on your precious society too?
Honestly, do you really want to live in a world where we never get pissed or smoke a joint or eat a little more steak than is strictly necessary? I'd rather die of lung cancer with clogged arteries and a diseased liver than live like that. And where do you draw the line... ban peanuts?! 150 people die each year in the US from peanuts (god bless 'em!).
Oh and for your information the goverment raises over £6 billion each year taxing smokers and only £1.4 billion was spent last year treating smoking related illnesses.
So the next time you or yours get treatment from the NHS I'm expecting a big thankyou because without my wheezily paid taxes you wouldn't get half the health service you do!
My hate is that they market products to ‘help’ stop an addiction to a particular drug using the same drug. This is what I find insane. The fact that it’s cigarettes in particular is beside the point. I know I gave the impression that I smoke, but that was purely to get the point across without sounding like yer typical droning ‘It’s all yer own fault’ non-smoker.
I don’t care if smokers smoke, I don’t even care that I might have to foot the NHS bill for them – I certainly would not want to eradicate them, some of the most illuminating (if a bit smelly) people I have met are smokers. But I do care that these nicotine replacement therapy adverts draw focus away from what smokers are ie. drug addicts and they further enhance the illusion that ‘giving up’ smoking is hard to do.
This approach to addiction (and I use the word addiction cautiously as what non-drug users regard as addiction is often no more than recreational usage) is nothing new, in the late nineteenth century heroin was being used to combat opium addiction and more recently methadone is being used to combat heroin addiction. In my opinion the only 'drug' that should be used to combat addiction is cannabis (taken without nicotine of course) as it is non-addictive and has no long-term health implications (unless you're mentally imbalanced).
The bottom line is that the peddlars of these 'quit aids' don't give a stinky shit about helping people, they've just seen a way to make a quick buck... welcome to capitalism!
No Gambling
No Intoxication (smoking, alchohol, drugs)
No Meat Eating
That would be a very good planet with healthy bodies and healthy minds.
Potentially boring, but that's just indicative of the laziness of most of society.
I guess we all agree nicotine patches are a rip... but then plenty of things pander to our idiocy... like religion ;)
End of the day it does seem rather stupid to cure an addiction with the addictive substance, but then maybe the patches are annoying and less potent so giving up becomes easier? Maybe it actually works!
Bollocks... I've just realised what the best response would have been. If it's not too late here it is...
I tried the patches but they didn't work for me... I couldn't keep them lit!!
I thank you!
Laughing fucking out loud on this one!
To cure one addiction with another on the face of it seems to make no sense. For me, patches helped me kick the habit by taking the edge off the addiction until good ole will power took over.
As for a world with no gambling, meat eaters or intoxication - certainly not a world I woudl want to be part of.
As for the rant - world class.
Welcome yeahbutnobut and good luck with the addiction!
Just watched the nicotinel ad - do I get the bird if I switch? first thing thats mind me think about changing from fags to patches.
Dont really understand why the concept of weaning yourself off something with something similar is so weird. Makes sense to me. Agree with poxinfinite that you should be able to just fucking stop if you want to...but plenty of people just cant and need the help. The Chairman was a patcher...and it worked.
So patches replace one form of nicotine with another which will help you give up smoking, with the help of willpower. So why not just use willpower to smoke fewer cigarettes?
Then we wouldn't have to endure the patronising advertising every January.
because theyre are so many weak people in the world who need a crutch
I had to delete this post and retype it, because of the incoherent rage I was suffering under during it's formulation.
I haven't seen the ad, but surely it's about personal responsibility. The socialised healthcare comment hits the nail on the head for me. Without reducing myself to the putrid depths of libertarianism, we should all be free to do whatever we want so long as we do no harm to others and pay the associated costs ourselves (or reap the associated benefits).
I don't give a fuck if you want to smoke, drink, inject heroin, live on a diet of Big Macs and Greggs sausage rolls or ride a motorcycle without a helmet, just don't ask me to foot the bill for your medical treatment and I won't ask you to pay for mine.
Lastly, if the nanny state tells me to do something for my own good then I will act like a petulant child and do the exact opposite.
